SBTSongs Podcast: Chrissy Metz

Welcome to Stories Behind the Songs with Chris Blair!  We hope you enjoy this podcast and will listen, follow, like, and rate us here on Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Google, iHeart, YouTube, or anywhere you listen to podcasts!

In this episode, I sit down with the one and only Chrissy Metz. You might know her from the hit NBC series, “This is Us". You may have even seen her on our Listening Room stage.

From Gainesville, Florida, Chrissy started her career working at McDonald's before moving on to teaching preschool. She always knew she enjoyed singing and music but never expected to be working in film or songwriting with legends. Chrissy began her entertainment career with assistant and agency work. After roughly nine years of scratching the surface, Chrissy received opportunities to star in hit television shows, "American Horror Story" and "This is Us".

But how did Chrissy get involved in the music and songwriting industry? Music director, songwriter, and producer, Jason Halbert, approached her at the Billboard music awards - at the time, she was still involved with film and television. Jason offered Chrissy the opportunity to write with other songwriters and introduce her to the music community. She decided to say yes and hasn't looked back since. Having her first ever co-write with Natalie Hemby and Daniel Tashian, she connected with songwriting, believing it to be, “the most magical experience you can have – to create a song out of nothing”.

In this episode, Chrissy breaks down two unreleased songs – “Broken Hearts Break Things”, written for her stepfather, and “Daddy’s Girl”, for her father. In these songs, she emphasizes the importance of forgiving others and having empathy for the experiences they have been through. When I asked Chrissy what advice she would give the version of herself working at that McDonald’s in Gainesville, she said, “Nothing is personal”. Much like the meaning behind these songs, she expresses that -

No one is out to get us, and most of the hurt we experience from others has nothing to do with us but entirely with them. We all operate at different frequencies, and life is about finding the people we feel comfortable with rather than trying to connect with everyone.

What's next for Chrissy?? She is now settled in Nashville and writing more music with talk of writing a one-woman show. We can’t wait to see all the incredible things Chrissy does and the lives she touches along the way!
